JAWS. LA PELÍCULA

Los tiburones siempre mueren en las películas. La vida es una película. Jaws es un anglicismo adoptado por toda una generación de nadadores, de hombres que nadan, diría Viel Temperley, también de origen inglés. En español se pronuncia como si se tratara de un desdoblamiento de la personalidad /Yos/. Pero esto no lo sabía, sólo que algunas bestias tienen más dientes que otras. Y dentar significa asirse al mundo, a lo mordido, al océano carioso, procarioso, jardín de sal. De ahí vengo. Como el tiburón blanco de Amity Island, Universal Studios. De ahí. 

Spielberg no sólo contó un mal día de un gran tiburón blanco, sino también del escualo cola negra, tiburón gata, tiburón linterna, tiburón linterna vientre de terciopelo, tiburón cigarro, tiburón noche de domingo sin tele por cable, tiburón probeta, tiburón imprenta, tiburón cojín, tiburón cacharro, tiburón ciclotímico, gatiburón, tiburón máquina, mako, yo… Todos reflejados en el ojo metálico de un robot en Hollywood. Y una alberca. Su mar era una alberca, su entorno era una alberca, su muerte: apenas un charco. Tiburón de utilería. Es más fácil morir ahogado en la bahía o en una tina de baño. En cualquier lugar con agua. En un vaso. Todo es agua. Esto es agua. El agua es una película. La vida es una película. Y en ella siempre se muere, alguien se muere. Casi siempre nosotros. Yos.

Sharks always die in movies. Life is a movie. Jaws is an Anglicism adopted by an entire generation of swimmers, of men who swim, de hombres que nadan, as Viel Temperley would say, also of English origin. In Spanish Jaws is pronounced as if it were the plural of I, a splitting of the personality /Yos/. But this I did not know, only that some beasts have more teeth than others. And to tooth means to cling to the world, to the bitten, to the cavity-filled ocean, prokaryotic, garden of salt. That’s where I’m from. Like the white shark from Amity Island, Universal Studios. From there. 

Spielberg not only told the story of a bad day for a great white shark, but also of the blacktip reef shark, catshark, lantern shark, velvet-belly lantern shark, cigar shark, Sunday night with no cable TV shark, test tube shark, imprint shark, cushion shark, rust-bucket shark, moody shark, kittyshark, machine shark, mako, me... All reflected in a robot’s metallic eye in Hollywood. And a pool. His sea was a pool, his environment was a pool, his death: barely a puddle. Prop shark. It’s easier to drown in the bay or in a bathtub. Anywhere with water. In a glass. Everything is water. This is water. Water is a movie. Life is a movie. And in it, there’s always death, someone always dies. Almost always us. Yos.
