ONE SMALL THING the Odyssey neglects to mention is that after Odysseus sails away from the cave of the Cyclops and the Cyclops returns home and slumps against the cave wall and the embers bleach white and the life he once lived drains slowly out and his death pours slowly in that is the moment when the baby cyclops comes toddling back from the dark recess where it went to hide when the strangers came, saying, Papa, is it safe now? Papa is it safe? (Michael Bazzett)
